Item description
Spinal cord injuries (SCIs) are medical emergencies that require immediate treatment to reduce long-term effects. Treatment can include:
Surgery
To remove tissue, fluid, bone fragments, disk fragments, or foreign objects that are pressing on the spinal cord. Surgery can also fuse broken bones, stabilize the spine, and prevent future pain or complications.
Traction
To stabilize the spine and bring it into proper alignment using a soft neck collar or brace.
Medicines
Such as corticosteroids to reduce swelling in the spinal cord, or methylprednisolone (Medrol) within 8 hours of injury. However, guidelines from 2013 recommend against using steroids early after an acute SCI due to a lack of evidence supporting their benefits and the risk of harmful side effects.
Observation and management
In the intensive care unit, which may include a breathing machine, bladder catheter, or feeding tube.
Other treatments
Such as experimental treatments, counseling or therapy, education, mobility aids, and assistive devices
